Originating in the West London area, WLM was established in 2015 with the some initial training and support from Migrants Organise/Refugee Welcome campaign led by Citizens UK. We initially ran some mentoring out of the YMCA in Ealing alongside ESOL classes provided by ‘English for Action’. Since then, we have continued to provide support to refugees who hear about us or are referred over to us. We also can provide one to one support for refugees that we know personally through our networks.

Despite the name, we are not limited to West London but our unique quality is that many of us are professionals from ‘migrant’ backgrounds all around the world coming together to help displaced persons. In addition, we have a number of Arabic speaking mentors in our group. This is crucial as not only can we serve as role models to the new migrants arriving in the UK but as cultural mediators, able to understand both the language and culture of new migrants from Arabic speaking countries; and therefore can support their smooth transition into UK culture.

We are pleased to be part of the City of Sanctuary network. Please do refer refugees to us who may need guidance or would simply like to befriend someone within our West London Sanctuary network.
